Trick Photography & Special Effects

Trick Photography and Special Effects is a book that landed in my inbox for review a short while ago. I must confess it has taken me a bit of time to get around to writing this review as I haven’t been able to put the book down since I got it.

The book is just crammed from cover to cover with great ideas, some of which I’ve seen before of course although quite a few are new to me. However, the point is that the ideas in this book are presented in a really inspirational way, it’s one thing knowing the nuts and bolts of a trick, and there’s plenty of good explanation here on how to do each one, but it’s quite another to see great pictures that really show you what can be done.

Although the author, Evan Sharboneau, is a great photographer in his own right, he obviously realized that no single person can take the definitive picture in every category, so he has utilized the web, particularly Flicker, to good advantage and so we, the readers, get really top notch examples of each idea. This makes the book a real page turner and will make you want to rush out and try some of the ideas.

The author also points out that you don’t really need to spend a lot of money on new toys for this, you may need to buy a new torch or something, but a lot of the tricks can be done with the equipment you already have. Some effects can be done in camera and, for the ones that do require software, this is mostly free or very cheap. The book is full of links to everything you need to download.
